Luckily, Southern Californians needn't look further than Bolsa Chica State Beach this summer. Located just off the Pacific Coast Highway, and blessed with a broad, sandy beach, tidal wetlands wildlife, perfect surf breaks and an abundance of outdoor activities, Bolsa Chica is the ideal spot for you and your family. And with 50 RV campsites -- replete with electric and water hookups -- you'll even have an ocean view room to catch the sunset.
Let's take a look at a few of the best ways to enjoy Bolsa Chica State Beach.
Anglers love Bolsa Chica thanks to its abundance of perch, corbina and croakers. There are even scheduled summer grunion run events, which draw crowds for bare-handed fishing.
Bolsa Chica and nearby Huntington Beach draw prime surf thanks to a shallow water break that helps craft perfectly curled waves.
This area’s vegetation was originally native coastal strand. Offshore, Pacific bottlenose dolphins, California sea lions and gray whales cavort in the waves. Birders will delight in the variety of local and migratory waterfowl and shorebirds visiting Bolsa Chica, like sanderlings, black skimmers, western sandpipers and the once-endangered California brown pelican. The park also offers sanctuary to the threatened western snowy plover and the endangered California least tern.
A paved beachside trail runs for 8.5 miles between Bolsa Chica and Huntington State Beaches, perfect for a beach stroll or a bike ride. Or play volleyball at one of the many courts, sign your kids up for the Junior Lifeguard Program at nearby Huntington State Beach or just layout in the sun!
