Skywriter to Recreate Love Skywriting Stamp

The Chino-based dedication ceremony includes a look-up twist.

Stamp dedication ceremonies can be as colorful and memorable as the stamp at the center of the celebration.

A widely touted release is not built around an official simply standing at a podium and stating "the anticipated postage stamp is here" and being done with it; rather, the United States Post Office is known for pairing the spirit of the stamp with the theme of the big kick-off.

The Elvis stamp released in the summer of 2015 made its debut at Graceland, while the "Star Trek" stamp while actor Walter Koenig helped present the "Star Trek" stamp in September 2016.

As for the Love Skywriting stamp, which is due for an early 2017 release? If you happen to be in Chino on Saturday, Jan. 7 you just may see the small rectangle writ large over a sizable portion of the sky as a pilot seeks to "replicate the stamp image" up in the clear blue yonder.

It makes sense that the skywriting-themed stamp would incorporate some stylish skywriting as part of its first-day-of-issue introduction ceremony, an event that will take place, on the ground, at the Planes of Fame Air Museum.

While the stamp-image skywriting demo starts at noon, there's a special program earlier in the day, with a "discussion about a World War II Curtiss P-40 Warhawk and how it was used for mail delivery..." It's an apt topic for a day built around a stamp that features a wee plane as part of its design.

Will the Love Skywriting stamp be for sale at the museum on that day? You bet, along with "other philatelic items." Will the first 300 people to show for the ceremony also receive free entry to the museum, if they wish to view more aerohistory? Again, you bet.

Actual stamps need to be envelope-ready, and thus on the small side. But stamp tributes can occasionally take the forms of paintings, over-sized photographs, and, in Chino in early January, a colossal tribute across the sky.
