Swimmer Swept Away, Drowns in Hermosa Beach

A swimmer drowned Sunday after being swept out in a rip current off of the coast of Hermosa Beach, authorities said.

Just before 5 p.m., the victim and friends were swimming at the beach near 8th Street and the Strand when the victim was swept beneath the waves, according to a Los Angeles County Fire Department official.

About 20 lifeguards who were training nearby searched the water and were able to bring the victim to shore and attempt to revive him or her, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
