Three Killed in Plane Crash Off Newport Beach

The single-engine plane went down in the water Sunday evening

Three people died Sunday when the private plane they were in crashed in the water at Back Bay, near Balboa Island off Newport  Beach, according to police and the Federal Aviation Administration.

The single-engine Beechcraft Muskateer crashed around 5:45 p.m., said  Ian Gregor of the FAA. The plane was upside-down in the water when authorities arrived, Gregor said.

Charles Chambers, 58; Sean Kelly, 44; and  Russell Urban, 63; died in the crash.

Gregor said the plane, which was registered to a Palos Verdes Estates  address, was flying from Mexico to Torrance.
