Driver Crashes Into Fire Hydrant, Damaging Water Main in Anaheim Hills

Water service was restored in the neighborhood early Wednesday

A driver crashed into a fire hydrant Tuesday night in Anaheim Hills, resulting in a geyser of water caused a sinkhole in the street, authorities said.

The crash happened about 8 p.m. at 5425 East Willowick Circle, Anaheim police Sgt. M. John said. The hydrant crash damaged a water main which Anaheim city crews spent the night repairing and that water service was restored to residents.

Officers and city crews were on the scene working to deal with the damage, he said. No injuries were reported.

"Eventually, it's got to go somewhere, and it creates a buckling in the asphalt," said Mike Lyster, of the city of Anaheim. "That's what happened here.

"They're putting on a temporary patch and will provide a permanent fix later on today."

Water service was restored in the neighborhood early Wednesday.

A utility pole also was damaged in the crash, a news videographer at the scene said.
