Winter Wonderfest: Snow in Santa Ana

The Discovery Cube is putting the "brrr" in break-time fun.

How long is winter break?

That depends on the school, or the office, and how much time away can be taken, and the specifics of the clock and calendar.

But the length of the break that arrives at the holiday is a bit of state of mind, too. Some breaks zoom by, while others drag, with many memories built around lively outings of the festive sort.

To keep your break on sparkly schedule, with no dragging (and no zooming), ponder folding in a bit of flake-forward fun, the kind of fun that comes from an hour or two spent in the snow in Santa Ana.

Yes, Santa Ana, a sun-laden location that isn't typically mentioned in the same sentence as "expected flurries." But Discovery Cube of Orange County is trucking in oodles of the cold, make-a-snow-ball-able stuff for its three-week-long Winter Wonderfest, a special happening that's all about alleviating any break-time restlessness.

A restlessness that can find delightful direction outside at the snow-centered doings, which include a long (hello, 75 feet) ramp for tubing as well as "a snow play area" and a spot for sledding.

The holiday-scented high jinks don't stop with the smell of snow, though. An exhibit called "The Science of Gingerbread" is on now, giving guests a peek at both creatively built structures and the chance to try their own hand at cookie decorating.

There's also gingerbread derby racing, and if that isn't the first thing you brag about when you return to work or school following the break, well, rethink your position on what is brag-worthy. (We suspect anything involving a derby or the spicy treat make the top of the braggy list.)

Holiday shows are screening throughout the day, so eye the roster if you want to see "Frosty the Snowman" during your visit.

Tickets, info, inspiration for breaking up that break? All right here, science-loving snowbirds.
