Long Beach High School Placed on Lockdown After Call of Person With Gun

Long Beach Polytechnic High School was placed on lockdown Wednesday while police searched the campus for a person possibly armed with a gun.

Officers were dispatched about 3 p.m. to the school at 1600 Atlantic Ave. in response to a "person with a gun" call, said Arantxa Chavarria of the Long Beach Police Department.

The suspect or suspects were believed to have left the location before officers arrived, Chavarria said, but the school was placed on a precautionary lockdown while officers conducted a sweep of the campus, she said.

The Long Beach Police Department sent an alert asking that parents arriving at the school meet their children at Anaheim Street and Atlantic Avenue.

An official with the Long Beach Unified School District told the Long Beach Press-Telegram the police response involved an off-campus incident, and while most students had been dismissed from class at 2:40 p.m., some students were still on campus for sports and after-school activities.
