Man Arrested After Standoff at Lake in Hollenbeck Park

An hourslong standoff in a lake east of downtown Los Angeles came to an end after the robbery suspect surrendered to authorities, who offered him pizza.

The bizarre standoff began after a woman walked into a police station just after 9:45 p.m. to report she was the victim of an armed robbery near East 6th Street and South Louis Street in Boyle Heights, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The victim showed officers to the last known location of the suspected robber and police were able to locate the man. Officers tried to make contact with the man who then fled on foot, police said.

The man then jumped into a lake where he remained for nearly two hours after an LAPD dive unit extracted him from the water. The man approached the shore after authorities offered him a slice of pizza.

One officer suffered a minor cut. No other injuries were reported.
