Man, 18, Shot and Killed Outside a South LA Market

The victim was found with gunshot wounds outside the Happy Shoppers Market

A man was shot and killed early Monday morning outside a market in South Los Angeles, police said.

Monte Bowman, 18, was found suffering from an unknown number of gunshot wounds in the 6400 block of South Vermont Avenue outside the Happy Shoppers Market at 2:15 a.m. He died at the scene.

Police said the shooter approached the victim on foot, fired shots at him, and possibly fled in a vehicle. A detailed description of the attacker was not immediately available.

The motive is unknown. It is unknown what weapon was used and if it has been recovered.

Due to the sensitive nature of the case and because of the large presence of the victim’s family and friends at the scene, police said they will not have a press conference to release further details. Family will be briefed before the media.

Police said the investigation is active, and the Los Angeles coroner is present.

Surveillance of the incident is available and will help with the investigation, police said. The video has not been released.

Arthur Jackson, Bowman’s grandfather, said the gunman destroyed the lives of many people in the community.

“I hope he doesn’t get any sleep at night. He should just turn himself in because [he] will never be able to sleep again,” Jackson said.

This is a developing story and will be updated as information becomes available.
