Mom Found With Syringe in Hand Arrested After Overdosing With Toddler in Backseat

The child’s grandmother was called by Child Protective Services, and given guardianship of the boy.

A mother was arrested after she was found unresponsive with a syringe in her hand as her 10-month-old son sat in the backseat, police in Indiana reported Saturday.

Officers responded to a Hope Dollar general store to investigate a possible overdose, according to Town of Hope police.

They found Erika Hurt sitting in the driver seat, passed out, with a needle in her left hand.

Her 10-month-old son sat in the back seat, watching the scene unfold. The officers have her two doses of NARCAN, a medicine that blocks the effects of opioids. She regained consciousness after the second shot and was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital before being taken to Bartholomew County Jail, police said.

She was arrested on suspicion of possession of paraphernalia, neglect of a dependent, and violating probation.
