Foreign intelligence officials say that it would have been difficult for the U.S. to “underestimate” the threat posed by ISIS, despite President Barack Obama’s comments in an interview broadcast on “60 Minutes” Sunday. An official said that the number of foreign fighters and the sophistication of the group’s use of social made it hard to ignore. A former senior U.S. intelligence official who has been briefed on what the White House might have known about ISIS told NBC News there is also a “paper trail” of warnings about ISIS, and policy makers “should have known” about the threat.
