1 Dead, 3 Critical After Nitrogen Tank Ruptures at La. Plant

Three people remained in critical condition late Friday after a container ruptured at a Donaldsonville, La., chemical plant, killing one person and wounding five others, police said. "There was no explosion, no fire," said the manager of the CF Industries plant, refuting earlier reports that there had been a blast there, just a day after an explosion at another chemical plant in the same parish killed two people. Friday evening, the Donaldsonville plant manager and sheriff said the tank rupture occurred when workers overpressurized a vessel they were filling from a truck at about 7:45 p.m. ET. According to NBC News, federal records show OSHA fined the company $150,000 after a fire and explosion killed three people at the same plant in 2000. The rupture came just after a Thursday morning explosion at a Williams Olefins plant about 30 miles away in Ascension Parish killed two people and wounded dozens more.
