Homes Evacuated in South Pasadena Due to Threat of House Slide

At least five homes were evacuated and a neighborhood was on notice Tuesday night after a water main break undermined a house on top of a hill in South Pasadena.

The home was located on the 1800 block of Hanscom Drive in the Monterey Hills area, according to the South Pasadena Police Department. Police said that residents in danger and requiring evacuations were being contacted directly.

"The driveway was creaking and groaning and coming down," homeowner Bob Lynes said. "It was just collapsing."

South Pasadena Fire Department crews were sent to the home in the 1800 block of Hanscom Drive around 8 p.m. Tuesday and were concerned about what might happen next.

"What's going to happen through the night, what's going to happen tomorrow, is the house going to slide a little bit, is there going to be anymore structural collapse of the driveway system," Battalion Chief Chris Szenczi said Tuesday evening. "We did have (Urban Search and Rescue) that evaluated and it just wasn't safe to get underneath that and try and shore it up."

The couple evacuated from the affected home said they have a safe place to stay. A total of five homes in the neighborhood were evacuated as a precaution.

No injuries were reported.
