Tommy John Surgery Recommended for Japanese Star Pitcher, Hitter Shohei Ohtani

Japanese star Shohei Ohtani underwent an MRI on his right elbow Wednesday, and the Los Angeles Angels said that UCL reconstruction surgery, commonly referred to as Tommy John surgery, is the recommended plan of care for the two-way player.

The 24-year-old Oshu, Japan native appeared in 81 games for the Angels as a hitter in his first Major League Baseball season and hit .276 with 16 home runs, 44 RBIs, 67 hits and 41 runs in 243 at bats.

On the mound, Ohtani had a 4-2 record over 10 starts, giving up 19 earned runs and 38 hits. If Ohtani's season ended Wednesday, he would end his first MLB season with an ERA of 3.31.

The Angels said "additional information will be provided when appropriate."
