The Many Moods of Pee-wee

Artists salute the bow-tie-iest, bike-lovingest boy in all the land.

If you were tasked with drawing something that summoned the sparkle of Pee-wee Herman, what would you choose? We'd probably go with painting Miss Yvonne's bouffant, in a rainbow of twinkly hues.

Several artists have taken on le monde du Pee-wee in a show at Gallery 1988. The exhibit is called "I Know You Art But What Am I?" You totally wanted it to be called that, right? You totally did.

The works are on at the Venice outpost through Aug. 19. Which, look at that! That happens to be the very day that "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" is showing for free at Hancock Park behind the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It's part of the Tim Burton-directed outdoor screenings the museum is holding in conjunction with the Burton exhibit, which is on through Halloween. (The free movies open on Friday, Aug. 5 with "Corpse Bride.")

If you'd like to preview the Gallery 1988 originals -- which include paintings and cool stuff like pillows -- take a look. The one that depicts Pee-wee as a giant parade balloon is rather memorable. Very rather memorable, in fact.
