The Guinness Milkshake

We read with enthusiasm, and a growing thirst, LAist's take on great grown-up (read: boozy) milkshakes around town. 8 oz. on Melrose was the featured milkshake maker in the piece, which helpfully advises not to expect the chocolate mint milkshake, made with Kahlua, Baileys and vodka, to appear on the menu. (You've got to know about it and ask the bartender.)

It brought to mind (and stomach) the grown-up sweet treat we've been raving about since first sampling it last February: the Guinness Milkshake at 25 Degrees in Hollywood. The Food Network had talked about a bar sadly many miles away from LA that had been pouring the Irish favorite into milkshakes, and we could hardly believe it. We had to try one immediately.

"Immediately" did not come immediately, but we're thankful nonetheless. The dreamy dessert at 25 Degrees is definitely a happy marriage between foamy beverage and frozen food, icy, slightly sour and delicious. The dark creaminess of the Guinness mingles wells with the frosty sugary kick of ice cream, and before you know it, your straw is searching for the last bit of liquid at the bottom of the cold metal cup.

More grown-up desserts, please. The combos seem natural: rum and egg nog ice cream, rum and pretty much anything, Guinness pie...
