Nexus 4 Sells Out at Google Play

Google Play

Google's Nexus 4 sold out in only minutes at the Google Play store, while at least one report said that the Netherlands' launch was canceled to free up inventory elsewhere -- but it's still unknown if it was for the United States.

But don't we think it probably was? Well, yeah. Both the 8GB and 16GB versions of the phone were sold out by the end of Tuesday. Similar stories were told in the UK and Australia, but as of yet we don't have any hard numbers on what that all means.

The Nexus 4 runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and, like all Nexus machines, are free of bloatware and the first to receive system updates, according to InformationWeek. It's also being sold for $299 for the 8GB model and $349 for the 16GB model, both unlocked and without a carrier contract. However, it lacks desirable LTE support.

Still, it does offer a 4.7-inch, 1280 by 768 pixel display, a 1.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor with 2 GB of RAM. There's also an 8 mega-pixel camera with 1080p HD video playback.

While this is no iPhone 5, the Nexus 4 does fulfill a needed niche in the smartphone market -- an independent one free of carrier contracts. But wouldn't be a lot nicer with LTE?
