LA County Fair
Pomona-big sunsets? Yep. Nights on the midway? So colorful. Lots of animals and snacks and things to see? For sure. The LA County Fair opens on Friday, Aug. 30.
LA COUNTY FAIR: We can't imagine what the largest county fair in the country's centennial will hold in just nine years, because the 91st outing of the annual Pomona party is big. BIG. It keeps the twinkly lights on for a month -- opening date is Friday, Aug. 30 and it says bye-bye on Sept. 29 -- and it is packed with fried foods and soft sheep and tablescaping competitions and award-winning beer tastings and one huge, and we mean galaxy-mega, "Star Trek" exhibit. So we're just saying this: If you see the Gorn lizard man strutting around the fairgrounds, do not be alarmed; just give him a high-five.
FIESTA HERMOSA: Sometimes one reaches the close of summer and realizes that they've only worn sensible work-type shoes and no flip-flops or sandals or canvas comfies and a sense of gentle sadness comes over them. An immediate remedy? Hermosa Beach's giant arts-and-crafts-and-tunes affair. It's close to the sand and made for casual wear, so break out your beachiest struts. Have you eaten an ice cream cone yet this summer? Remedy that, too, from Aug. 31-Sept. 2.
ORANGE INTERNATIONAL STREET FAIR: Several factors make this food-filled extravaganza, an extravaganza that's plunk in the middle of charming downtown Orange, stand out. It has impressive longevity -- 41 years and counting. It has the big attendance and the entertainment choices, too. But attendees always cite the streets that denote various countries and cuisines. It helps the foodie navigate through many, many delectable choices. Friday, Aug. 30 through Sunday, Sept. 1
BROAD FEST: Are you a theater-loving family that digs a behind-the-scenes peek at a cool stage? Yeah, we think you just might be. Best get to The Broad Stage on Sunday, Sept. 1 for Broad Fest, a free fam-nice day of tunes, cultural offerings, and interactive booths ("Water Station" is one of the booths. So, yeah, it might be perfect for the warm holiday weekend).
GROWN-UP PAJAMA PARTY: Look, we like wearing our flannels around as much as the next person, but if you attend this nighttime soiree on the Queen Mary, you'll want to gussy-up your nightgown and slippers. The swell to-do is part of the larger Art Deco Festival, a Labor Day Weekend tradition that gathers together lovers of past fashion and architecture. So, you have the mules with the pink fake feathers on them, right? Wear those. The pjs come out on Friday, Aug. 30.
