Violence erupted in South Los Angeles after a man was fatally shot during a birthday party and three dead bodies were found in two vehicles over Father’s Day weekend.
On Saturday night, 48-year-old Derrick Hill was celebrating a relative’s birthday party when he was fatally shot by who police suspect is his own brother.
"I lost one of my babies," said Doris Hill, the victim's mother. "Something I never wanted to do."
The shooting occurred in front of a home in the 800 block of East 78th Street around 9 p.m.
Firefighters found Hill suffering from a gunshot wound and took him to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries, LAPD Lt. Jeff Nolte said. The victim was shot near his home, officials said.
Preliminary investigation showed that the shooting was not gang related, officials said. Police said the suspected shooter is Hill's brother, though a motive was still unknown.
The suspect had not been taken into custody as of 10:30 a.m., police said.

On Friday night Aveion Bolden, 20, and Jacinta Walker, 18, were killed in a car-to-car shooting on Figueroa at 86th Street around 10 p.m. The driver of the car, Anthony Cudger, allegedly returned fire and killed Trevor Williams.
Cudger was arrested in what police believe was a gang-related shooting.
Between June 4 an June 10, violent crimes were on the rise in South LA. Eleven homicides, rapes, aggravated assaults and robberies took place, not including the four killed this weekend.
Lt. Jeff Nolte said that despite the violent weekend, the area is much safer than 20 years ago.
