LA School of Public Health Gets $50 Million Donation

Money comes from the head of the LA County Public Health Department

UCLA's School of Public Health celebrated a major windfall Thursday, announcing it had received the biggest single donation in its history.

It came from someone who has worked for years to keep Los Angeles County healthy.

Dr. Jonathan Fielding is the director of the Los Angeles County Public Health Department. His wife, Dr. Karin Fielding, is a health educator.

Together they have donated $50 million to the School of Public Health.

Next month, the school will be renamed the Jonathan and Karin Fielding School of Public Health.

The money comes from investments that turned out to be very lucrative, Fielding said.

They chose to give the money to the school because "public health can make the greatest difference to the greatest number of lives."

"It's the proudest moment of my life and I think it will be the proudest moment in both our lives because we're really making a statement here that we care about the school and we care about public health," Karin Fielding said.
