Bullet Train May Go Under Dodger Stadium

Plans to connect San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco using a bullet train may take a slight detour. Under Dodger stadium to be more specific.

The California High-Speed Rail Authority has been working on a $45 billion dollar plan to connect the three cities. The proposal calls for a stop at Union Station but the route would take the train along the Los Angeles River through Cypress and Glassell Park.

That hasn't floated well with river advocates and Councilman Ed Reyes.

But federal and state officials are looking into a compromise that calls for constructing a tunnel under Dodger Stadium.

According to The Eastsider LA:

After leaving Union Station, the train, under one scenario, would travel through a tunnel underneath the state parking now taking shape near Chinatown, Dodger Stadium and Elysian Park before emerging on the other side of the river, Reyes said today.

The proposal is still on the drawing board and no final decision as been made.

Experts say tunneling would be expensive and an environmental report is required before moving forward.

The state is expected to get $2.25 billion in federal stimulus to help fund the project. Construction could start in two years.
