Trial Begins in Crash That Killed UFC Entrepreneur

Opening arguments held Tuesday

A Costa Mesa man went on trial Tuesday for the March 2009 collision that claimed the life of mixed martial arts entrepreneur Charles Lewis Junior.

Jeffrey David Kirby, 53, was accused of driving at high speeds and under the influence when his Porsche struck Lewis' Ferrari, sending it into a utility pole and killing the driver.

Kirby, who had a previous arrest for driving under the influence, claimed through his attorney, that he did not cause the crash, but was ahead of Lewis' vehicle when it crashed.

But in his opening statement, the prosecutor said, Kirby lost control of his vehicle and clipped the Ferrari at a speed of more than 100 miles an hour.
