A woman opened fire on a dog Wednesday after it attacked her 6-year-old daughter in her driveway, according to authorities.
The dog was shot by the child's mother, who rushed outside after hearing screams. Authorities received a 911 call at 10:49 a.m. from the 22000 block of Marylhurst Court, sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said.
The girl was playing with her 3-year-old sister in the driveway of their home when the dog knocked her down and bit her on the shoulder, left leg, face and arms, Amormino said.
The girls' mother heard both her daughters screaming and rushed outside. The mother, her 14-year-old son and a neighbor tried to get the dog away from her 6-year-old, Amormino said.
The girl's brother punched the dog several times. The neighbor sprayed the animal with Windex, Amormino said.
The mother, who also had her year-old child with her, gathered up the three children and ran inside the house with the dog nipping at the baby's pants leg, Amormino said.
The mother failed to scare away the dog, which stood on the porch, so she got a 9-mm Glock and shot the canine once in the neck, Amormino said. The dog staggered over to the sidewalk and spent about 10 minutes in a pool of blood before getting up and scampering between two homes, where deputies cornered it, Amormino said.
The dog was taken to a local veterinarian's office and the girl was treated by paramedics, Amormino said. Her parents planned to take her to the family physician for further treatment, he added.
Neighbors told investigators the dog has been seen around the neighborhood acting aggressively, but they don't know the identity of the owner, who could be cited by animal control if located, Amormino said.
