Man Killed After SUV Slams Into Tree in Upland

Aerial footage showed the totaled SUV wrapped around a tree.

A man was killed after a speeding SUV slammed into a tree in Upland on Wednesday.

Aerial footage from NewsChopper 4 showed a mangled SUV wrapped around a tree on 8th Street and Euclid Avenue in Upland. The SUV's motor — detached from the vehicle — lay several feet away in the street.

The vehicle was speeding south on Euclid and "appeared to lose control" around 4:30 p.m., police said. The car appeared to have veered off the road and ultimately ended up hitting a tree at a high rate of speed.

There is evidence that the driver was drinking, speeding and street racing, according to the Upland Police Department.

"I heard the screeching of tire," witness David Cutting told NBC4. "I looked up and saw the car flying. It was sideways going out of control."

Other people who saw the fatal crash were shocked by what they saw through all the smoke.

"It was wrapped around a tree and the motor was in the street," witness Lupe Lemus said.

Another man who said he saw the crash unfold told NBC4 that he saw the SUV and a black Camaro racing down Euclid.

"They were flying," Lee Gill said.

Drivers were asked to avoid Euclid Avenue between 8th and 9th Streets while investigators were on scene.

The man's identity has not yet been released.
