Suspicious Package Triggers Second Day of School Evacuations in Santa Ana

The bomb squad also helped Anaheim police check out at least one suspicious package at a UPS facility

For the second day in a row, reports of suspicious packages triggered the evacuation of students and employees from Santa Ana School District buildings.

Santa Ana Unified School District police evacuated the warehouse at 720 N. Fairview St. and nearby schools while the bomb squad ran the "suspicious'' packages through X-ray machines, Orange County sheriff's Lt. Mike Peters said.

Dozens of students from a nearby community day school were bused to another location for safety. And, another 1200 students at Spurgeon Intermediate were placed on a soft lock down. They were not allowed outside, but continued with their school day.

The bomb squad also helped Anaheim police check out at least one suspicious package at a UPS facility in the 1300 block of South Lewis Street this morning, Anaheim police Sgt. Rick Martinez said. That package was also considered safe after investigators checked it, Martinez said.

Only clothes and papers were found in the packages, which were judged suspicious because they were addressed to individuals and not departments as is usually the case at the warehouse and because there was some foreign writing on the packages.

Police say the packages were addressed to a specific person, a name unknown within the entire Santa Ana school district.

"We're trying to determine the original source and who did this beyond what's in the packages," said Santa Ana School District Chief David Valentin. "I think there is a heightened sense of awareness and we need to respond accordingly."

On Tuesday, district employees notified police after finding two suspicious packages in the receiving area of the Fairview distribution center.

Police evacuated around 150 students and 75 staff members from the facility.

The bomb squad determined the packages were safe. One was a suitcase that contained clothes and documents and the other was an empty box, Santa Ana School police said.

Parents were notified of the evacuations and students were taken to a nearby campus and continued their day.
