Road Worker Injured in Possible DUI Crash Near LAX

The crash occurred near the 105 Freeway and Sepulveda Boulevard early Thursday

A road worker was hospitalized in critical condition Thursday morning after a crash involving a drunken driving suspect who slammed into a work zone sign trailer that spun around and struck the crew member near Los Angeles International Airport.

The worker -- a contractor with Los Angeles Department of Public Works -- suffered two broken arms and a concussion, authorities told NBC4. The driver involved in the crash, identified as 30-year-old Devin Scott Enderle, will be booked on suspicion of DUI, according to Los Angeles police.

The crash, reported at about 4:30 a.m., occurred near the 105 Freeway and Sepulveda Boulevard near the tunnel that leads under an LAX runway, according to the California Highway Patrol. The worker was one of two crew members on a street lighting project near the tunnel, according to the Public Works department.

The driver crashed into the crew's orange sign trailer, which then struck the worker, who was picking up cones and road flares, according to authorities.

"The victim was knocked out of his shoes, which isn't that uncommon at scenes like this," said Sgt. Joel Sydanmaa. "But it shows you the force."

Aerial video showed a white pickup tangled in the support structure of the sign trailer and the workers' Toyota Tacoma pickup nearby.

The northbound Sepulveda Boulevard tunnel lanes were closed, but authorities began allowing traffic from the 105 Freeway through on the Sepulveda Boulevard shoulder at about 7 a.m.
