Flashlight Safari: Big Bear October Outing

Venture through the Big Bear Alpine Zoo after sundown and admire the residents by moonlight.

NIGHTTIME CALLS: If you're tucking into bed that's located inside a forest cabin, you're probably going to hear some of the creatures of the woodland rustling about, or howling, or hooting, or chittering, or doing whatever that particular creature does best (and, of course, innately). But seeing a few of those beautiful critters after dark? It's a rarity. There is a special evening event each October at the Big Bear Alpine Zoo at Moonridge, and it gives humans a chance to commune with animals at an unusual time of day. It's the Flashlight Safari, and it flicks the "on" switch, the one that turns on knowledge and wonder, every...

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT... in October. The first Friday outing of 2017 is on Oct. 6, and you'll want to arrive by 6:30 p.m., as all entries stop after 7 o'clock. Arriving with your own flashlight? You'll want to do that, and if everyone in your group wants their own flashlight for the adventure, well, best ring the neighbors or flashlight-owning friends soon. You'll experience "the more active side of our animals during twilight and dusk" at the zoo, a fascinating thing, especially since many animal parks close well before sundown each day. Also fascinating, and moving, too? The zoo's longtime commit to rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife. Many beasties needing some true TLC are brought to the zoo each and every year.

DRESSING IN A FALL FASHION... for your nighttime outing, as in layers or with warmth in mind? A must, of course. A ticket is $12 for grown-ups, $9 for seniors over 60 and kids between the ages of 3 and 10. Those under 3 are admitted free. Will you find an owl you adore? Or behold a badger or deer that delight you? The animals at the Big Bear Alpine Zoo are local to the area, meaning that the next time you're in a cabin at night, and you hear something rustling outside, it just might be an owl or coyote, much like the ones you admired on the Flashlight Safari.
