Gas Leak in Burbank Prompts Evacuations, Snarls Traffic

Construction crews on Tuesday apparently ruptured a gas line along Buena Vista Street just south of Victory Boulevard in Burbank, prompting the evacuations of residents in the immediate area.

By 5:20 p.m., crews were ripping up cement and digging beneath the street trying to find the main valve to turn off the gas, according to aerial footage of the scene.

Streets are cordoned off and Buena Vista Street was closed between Victory Boulevard and Burbank Boulevard (map). Traffic in the area, which features several retail outlets, is jammed.

It was not immediately known when officials might reopen the street, though officials estimated it could take up to four hours.
