Hazmat Crew Investigates Substance at Inglewood Courthouse

The Inglewood courthouse was evacuated Monday as a hazmat team investigated a powder that injured a worker at the clerk's office, fire officials said.

The incident was reported about 2:20 p.m. Monday, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

"There was someone that was opening up the package and at that point she may have passed out, as well as she had a burning sensation to her hand," said Deputy Ryan Rouzan of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Fourteen people may have come in contact with the worker, including emergency responders. They were expected to go through a decontamination process that included removing their clothes.

At least one woman was taken to the hospital. She was in a white, protective suit.

Initially, only the second floor of the courthouse was evacuated. The building was later closed for the day as a precaution.
