Hollywood Sign Ready for Makeover With 300 Gallons of Paint

The iconic sign will be stripped down to sheet metal, primed and given a new coat of white paint. This will be the sign’s most extensive makeover in nearly 35 years.

The project is more than just a face-lift. The back of the sign will be scraped, sanded and painted during the 10-week process.

Funded by the Hollywood Sign Trust with contributions from Sherwin Williams, the renovation comes just in time for the landmark’s 90th birthday next year. The sign was first built in the early 1920’s with a cost of $21,000.

The "Hollywoodland" sign was used in effort to promote a Hollywoodland Real Estate Group Development. The last four letters of the sign were later removed in 1949, when the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce entered into a preservation deal.

The landmark was replaced after Playboy Founder Hugh Hefner hosted a fundraiser in 1978. For the price of $28,000, celebrities like Alice Cooper, Gene Autry and Andy Williams were able to ceremonially purchase the letters.
