Police Fatally Shoot Man Allegedly Wielding Knife in San Fernando Valley

The man may have been trying to cut himself on a bus with the knife, police said

Police officers fatally shot a knife-wielding man in the San Fernando Valley on Sunday afternoon, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The confrontation was reported about 3:15 p.m. in the area of Haskell Avenue and Victory Boulevard (map), police said.

No officers were hurt in the shooting.

The man may have been trying to cut himself on a bus with the knife, police said.

When officers approached him to try to get him to put down the knife down, he acted aggressively so they opened fire, police said.

The man was identified by Los Angeles police and a coroner's assistant as 22-year-old Josue Fuentes.

The fatal shooting was one of three LAPD officer-involved shootings that ended in fatalities Sunday. All of them appeared to be unrelated.

A gunman driving a pickup truck allegedly opened fire at officers in Cypress Park on Sunday night. SWAT officers shot at the man, killing him. News footage showed the man was apparently armed with a sawed-off shotgun.

Earlier, about 6:30 a.m., another gun battle broke out between police and a man barricaded in his home near Gage Avenue and Figueroa Street in South Los Angeles. Police said the man opened fire on them and officers returned fire. At this time it appears as though he may have killed himself, police said.

The LAPD said it had been five weeks since their last officer-involved shooting.
