Detectives are looking for two men who dropped off a gunshot victim at a South Los Angeles emergency room, then took off, authorities said.

The wounded man later died in the hospital in a shooting believed to be connected to bullet shell casings scattered on a lawn in the 4000 block of 111th Street, where a car was hit by gunfire, according to LA County Sheriff's deputies.

"We're making the assumption that he was shot there but we still haven't confirmed that," Lt. John Corina said.

The gunshot victim was dropped off at Centinela Hospital Medical Center minutes after the shooting was reported, just after midnight Monday night.

Corina said they would know what happened

The neighborhood was on edge after the shooting, which unfolded outside their homes. Luisa Sanchez is in the area often, and was trying to get in touch with relatives.

"I wanted to know if it was a friend," Sanchez said.
