Suspect in West Covina Officer Shooting Arrested in SWAT Operation

Deputies arrested a man early Thursday morning suspected of shooting and injuring a West Covina police officer, authorities said.

Jose Luis Chavez, 47, was taken into custody around 2 a.m. at a home in the 1200 block of Foxworth Avenue in La Puente, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Chavez was arrested after SWAT and deputies served a warrant at the residence.

Family members said they were not aware the suspect was hiding at the home.

"It was just really scary," said Anabel Estrada. "I had no idea what was going to happen and what was happening."

The officer was shot Friday night near N. Yaleton Avenue and Badillo Street, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The officer was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff's department said Chavez has an extensive criminal record, but did not provide specific details. He was considered armed and dangerous, deputies said.

Deputies said Chavez was hospitalized due to injuries he might have suffered in Friday's shooting.
