Deputies Shoot, Kill Man Who Allegedly Gunned Down Mother in Highland Standoff

A shotgun-toting man who gunned down a relative and threatened to shoot her two children during a standoff in Highland was shot dead by sheriff's deputies, officials said.

A man called 911 about 1:22 p.m. Wednesday to report that he'd received a call from his wife, saying a cousin was inside their home in the 7000 block of Osbun Road and was threatening to hurt her and their two children, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said.

Responding deputies and SWAT members tried to get the man to come out of the home, but he allegedly made threats against deputies and continued to threaten to shoot the hostages.

Deputies opened fire on the man, killing him.

The woman was found inside the home suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to the hospital, where she died.

The children were not hurt, officials said. They were reunited with their father.

The identities of the gunman and mother were withheld pending family notification.
