Man Faces Charges in Crash That Killed Woman, Granddaughter

A 20-year-old man who may have been street racing last week when he allegedly smashed into a car and killed a woman and her granddaughter was charged on Monday.

Alec Scott Abraham, of Costa Mesa, is charged with two felony counts of gross vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, one felony count of hit-and-run with permanent injury or death, one felony count of reckless driving with bodily injury, and one misdemeanor count of petty theft by taking and carrying away, prosecutors said.

He also faces sentencing enhancements for fleeing the scene of a vehicular manslaughter and inflicting great bodily injury. If convicted, he faces up to 14 years in state prison.

Katherine Hampton, 54, and her 2-year-old daughter, Kaydence, died when the car they were in was allegedly hit by the Ford Mustang that Abraham was driving in after he sped through a red light in Irvine.

After the crash, the suspect is accused of taking a bystander's cellphone and running away.

Katherine Hampton died at the scene. Her 28-year-old daughter, who was seated in the passenger seat, was treated for a broken jaw. A 7-year-old grandson, who was seated in the rear passenger seat, was treated for a broken collarbone.

Kaydence, who was seated behind the driver’s seat, was in cardiac arrest following the crash. She was revived at the hospital, but had significant brain swelling, and died Sunday.

A driver in another car that was hit in the crash suffered minor injuries.

Abraham was arrested at a Costa Mesa park on Thursday.
