Machete-Wielding Man Fatally Shot By Police in Whittier

A man holding a machete was shot and killed by police in Whittier Wednesday morning.

Whittier police officers responded to the 13400 block of Penn Street around 6 a.m. when a neighbor reported seeing a man walking down Penn Street carrying a machete and banging it on the ground.

Officers located the man and detained him, but the man reportedly threatened officers with a machete. He also picked a stick up off of the ground, threw it at one of the officers and hit him, said Lt. Steve Jauche of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives.

"At some point during contact with the officers, the man charged at them with a machete," Jauche said. Two officers opened fire and struck the man multiple times.

The man was taken to a local hospital where he later died, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The machete was recovered at the scene.

No officers were injured.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives responded to assist Whittier Police Department personnel with the investigation of the shooting.

Their investigation was ongoing Wednesday. Jauche said they would remain at the scene all day to process evidence and to interview potential witnesses and the officers involved.

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.
