Santa Ana police shot and wounded a man officers believed was reaching for a weapon following a foot chase.

Cpl. Anthony Bertagna says police received a call early Sunday of unknown trouble involving a man and a woman on a residential stretch of East Washington Avenue.

When officers arrived the man ran off, leading them on a chase through several yards.

Bertagna says officers opened fire when the man turned to face them and reached for his waistband. He  hopped a fence and was taken into custody a short time later.

The man, whose name was not released, was hospitalized in serious condition with a gunshot wound to his torso.

Bertagna says investigators are looking for two people who were in the area at the time of the shooting, and may have taken a weapon belonging to the man.
