Downed Power Lines Cut Electricity to Thousands in Moreno Valley

Residents were warned to stay in their homes

Power to more than 2,500 customers was cut off Tuesday after downed power lines draped over roofs, fences and into pools in Moreno Valley, according to fire officials on scene.

As of 8:30 p.m., about 194 customers were still in the dark, according to SoCal Edison officials.

About 1 square mile between Filaree Avenue to the north, Kitching Street to the east, Gentian Avenue to the south and Patricia Street to the west was cordoned off from motorists and pedestrians.

Most of the area’s residents were notified in person about what was happening around their homes, said Fire Captain Rick Griggs, with Riverside County Fire, who spoke with NBC 4 from the scene.

Residents were warned to stay in their homes, Griggs said. Although the area was powered down, officials advised them to treat any downed line as if it were live and not to drive or walk on wires.

What caused the lines to fall is under investigation, but Riverside sheriff’s officials speculated that it may have stemmed from a blown transformer.

The report was called in around 3:30 p.m., when 10 engine and two ladder companies responded to the scene, Griggs said.
