Mother Arriving Home With Toddler and Groceries Stabbed

A busted screen door and a trail of blood mark the Monrovia apartment where police say a mother, who was arriving home with her 2-year-old daughter and groceries late Wednesday night, was stabbed by an unknown attacker.

The 36-year-old mother had arrived to the apartment complex in the 200 block of S. Madison Avenue about 11 p.m. when she was attacked from behind with a knife, according to the Monrovia Police Department.

"She was screaming, 'Help me! Help me!'" said neighbor Edward Shahnazarian.

The mother was taken to the hospital in critical condition. She underwent surgery for wounds to her face, neck, arms and back, police said.

Her daughter was not hurt.

Neighbors said the woman also has a teenage son.

"I know her personally, she's a very good lady," Shahnazarian said. "They are good people."

Police had no information on the assailant.

Anyone with information was asked to call Monrovia police at 626-256-8000.
