Officer Shoots Knife-Wielding Man Seen Cutting Own Throat

A police officer opened fire at a knife-wielding man seen cutting his own throat near a residence in Long Beach on Thursday night.

Long Beach police officers were dispatched around 9:30 p.m. to a residence in the 100 block of The Colonnade Canal regarding reports for the man, who appeared intoxicated, trying to enter through the front door, said police department spokeswoman Marlene Arrona.

An officer confronted the man, who was cutting his own throat with a knife, Arrona said. When the officer tried to negotiate with him, the man advanced toward the officer and the officer shot him.

The man was taken to the hospital and was in critical but stable condition. It was not immediately clear if he was struck by gunfire, and his condition was not immediately reported.

No officers were injured in the incident, Arrona said.
