Residents Evacuated During Standoff in West Covina

Suspect taken into custody.

A man believed to be armed was taken into custody by police following a standoff involving SWAT Wednesday night in West Covina, police said.

The standoff was reported around 9 p.m. and began with an altercation between the suspect and his wife at a DMV office where he threated to hurt the family. The incident continued at their residence where the suspect then took his family hostage, according to the West Covina Police Department.

The suspect eventually released his children but then barricaded himself in the home. Nearby homes were evacuated because it was believed the suspect could possibly be armed with a gun, according to the West Covina Police Department.

Officer made contact with the suspect around 3:25 a.m. Thursday and were able to take him into custody about 15 minutes later.

The suspect suffered minor injuries at some point during the standoff. No other injuries were reported.
