Four Boaters Dead Off Santa Cruz Island

A relative called authorities after the four men did not return from a weekend fishing trip

Three of four boaters who died Sunday off the coast of Santa Cruz Island when their vessel capsized were identified Monday afternoon.

The men whose bodies were recovered were identified as Sieng Sophorn Bun, 37, of Oxnard; Edgar Allen Isnec, 54,  of Port Hueneme; and Ramiro Alvarez Duarte, 52, of Oxnard. The body of a fourth boater was not located.

The men's bodies were spotted Sunday after their 24-foot boat capsized near the island, part of the Channel Islands chain. Crews recovered three of the four bodies Sunday and resumed the search Monday for the fourth body.

"There was some chop in the area, so somebody moving in the boat the wrong way could capsize the vessel," said Coast Guard Petty Officer Adam Eggers.

Details regarding the cause of death were not immediately available, but officials speculated.

"That water is about 40 degrees colder than your body naturally is, so the process of hypothermia starts immediately," Eggers said.

The men launched the boat Saturday morning from Channel Islands Harbor, according to the Coast Guard.

The search began after a relative reported that the men had not returned from their fishing trip. A Coast Guard helicopter crew located one body on the boat and two others floating in the water about 100 yards away.

The fourth body was last spotted about five miles away from the boat and has not been recovered.

Autopsies for the recovered bodies were being conducted by the Santa Barbara County coroner's office.
