SoCal Homeless to Receive Winter Survival Kits

A nonprofit group, The Giving Spirit, is readying to distribute survival kits to the homeless on Saturday, Dec. 14 and Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013. The distribution on Saturday comes on the same day that Monday Night Mission (pictured), a nonprofit group that regularly feeds homeless, plans a protest in response to legislation that proposes ending public homeless feeding in Los Angeles.

A reprieve from recent cold conditions is on its way for some homeless as volunteers begin to assemble survival kits that will be distributed in Southern California this weekend.

Los Angeles-based organization The Giving Spirit is readying their December kits, filled with more than 60 items including clothing, food and hygienic products designed to get the homeless through the winter.

Items included in the kit are a wool cap, umbrella, blanket, soap, shampoo, duffel bag and granola bars.

Distribution is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. Volunteers will hit the streets in downtown, Santa Monica, San Fernando Valley and other areas in-between to hand out the kits face-to-face, the group said in a statement.

The Giving Spirit said more than 25,000 kits have been assembled and distributed since being founded in 1999. The kits are currently being assembled at the Brentwood Presbyterian Church.

Distribution is set for Saturday between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and Sunday between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The distribution comes after the Los Angeles City Council proposed a ban on feeding the homeless in public places and four people died in the Bay Area due to hypothermia-related causes.
