Boy, Parents Injured After Street Racing-SUV Collides With Sedan

A white Mercedes SUV and a gray or silver pickup truck were going 60 to 80 mph when they both ran a red light, police said.

A 10-year-old boy and his parents were injured after their car was struck by an SUV that police believe was involved in a street race with a pickup truck in Costa Mesa Monday night, police said.

A white Mercedes SUV was traveling 80 mph north on Placentia Avenue with a gray or silver pickup truck just after 10:30 p.m. when both vehicles ran a red light and the SUV collided with a Kia sedan at Wilson Street in Costa Mesa.

The Mercedes SUV then went through the intersection and demolished the fence of home.

"We just heard boom, boom, boom," said resident Mayumi Arcinieaga. "Like cars crashing on top of each other."

A mother, father and son inside the Kia sedan were injured. A 10-year-old boy suffered a head injury and was hospitalized, but the injury was not considered life threatening.

The boy's father was hospitalized, but details regarding his condition were not available Tuesday afternoon. The child's mother was treated at the scene.

The pickup driver left the scene, but is not considered the subject of a hit-and-run crash because the vehicle was not involved in the crash that injured the people inside the Kia, police said.

None of the seven occupants in the SUV were injured. The driver of the SUV, identified as a 21-year-old woman, could be cited in connection with the crash, according to police.

Resident Jeff Bannon is not surprised.

"They race around here too much," he said. "It's a problem.
