Two Men Accused of ‘Shoulder Surfing' at ATMs

Prosecutors planned to charge two men with allegedly looking over patrons' shoulders at ATMs, also known as 'shoulder surfing,' possibly for the first time in Los Angeles history.

The two men were arrested by police in Tarzana.

The scam reportedly involves people looking over someone's shoulder as they wait at an ATM to complete a transaction. Some ATMs ask customers to remove their card once they begin a transaction. If they forget to end the transaction, the account may stay open after they leave the ATM, which is when scammers could take over.

The shoulder surfing scam is considered an emerging trend.

Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer and LAPD officials planned to discuss the charges Thursday at 11 a.m..

It was unclear how many ATM's the men facing charges had allegedly visited or how many people were possible unsuspecting victims.

Correction: An earlier version of the article misidentified the office held by Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer.
