Vigil Held for College Student Killed in Paramount Crash

Neighbors mourned Thursday night over the loss of a college student killed in a car crash in Paramount.

Yadira Alvarez, 23, was killed around 3 a.m. when the 2013 Chevrolet Camaro she was a passenger in crashed and hit a tree near Somerset Boulevard and Texaco Avenue, authorities said.

According to the preliminary investigation, the motorist was driving
east on Somerset Boulevard at a high rate of speed when the car went out of
control and hit a tree, said sheriff's Sgt. Paul Jernigan of the Lakewood
Station.

The woman's boyfriend, 25-year-old Giovanni Pena, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, authorities said.

Neighbors said Alvarez' grandmother lived in the area and Alvarez attended University of California Irvine where she majored in Criminology.

Pena was due in court June 13. It was unclear if he had an attorney.
