A carjacker was caught on camera stealing a 67-year-old man’s truck then dragging his victim 25 feet into the middle of the street, running over his limp body and speeding away, authorities said.
The violent incident happened June 25. Investigators on Friday revealed surveillance footage for the first time, saying they have exhausted their leads and need the public’s help.
The victim parked his truck in the driveway of a business in the 12400 block of Carson Street in Hawaiian Gardens about 2 p.m. on June 25, and left the keys in the truck’s ignition, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
A bicyclist rode past the unlocked truck then returned moments later. He tossed his bike in the truck bed, hopped in the driver’s seat and turned the key, officials said.
Realizing someone was driving away in his pickup, the 67-year-old victim opened the driver-side door and briefly struggled with the thief.
Backing up quickly, the carjacker ran over the victim with the truck’s front tire – leaving him on a center divider and driving away west on Carson Street.
The 67-year-old suffered a fractured pelvis, fractured ribs on the left side of his chest, and minor bleeding in his brain. Now out of the hospital, the victim had been listed in critical condition.
His white pickup truck was abandoned and found a day after the attack, but the carjacker has not been caught as of Friday night.
Surveillance cameras caught an image of the carjacker, pictured below.
