Woman in Electric Wheelchair Killed in SoCal Highway Crash

A woman in an electric wheelchair was fatally struck by a car in Los Angeles's high desert on Saturday night, authorities said.

The woman, in her 30s, was in the roadway when she was hit at approximately 8 p.m. on the Sierra Highway near Avenue J-2 in Lancaster, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

The driver, who was traveling southbound, stopped after the woman was hit, said deputies, who did not make an arrest.

"Why a woman in a wheelchair (was) in the number two lane period is in question," Sgt. Mike Fredericks said.

Neither alcohol nor speed appeared to be factors in the collision, deputies said.

Deputies were waiting to identify the woman until they notified her next of kin.
