Man Killed During Boat Launch in Marina del Rey

A driver backed up an SUV at an unsafe speed at a Marina del Rey boatyard and struck and killed a man who was helping attach the vehicle to a trailer, the California Highway Patrol said Sunday.

The 40-year-old victim was struck about 3:20 p.m. Saturday at Dock 77 at 13650 Mindanao Way and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP. His name was withheld pending notification of his next of kin.

The driver, 64-year-old Romulo Perez of Los Angeles, was backing up a 1999 Ford Expedition to a boat trailer as the victim, who was assisting, stood to the rear of the SUV, which was reversed at "unsafe speeds," according to a CHP release.

After hitting the man, the SUV continued going backward and struck a Hyundai Genesis and a Dodge Charger.

Perez was not arrested, but the fatality remains under investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the crash was urged to call the investigating officer at the CHP's West Los Angeles Office at (310) 642-3939.
