At 6-6, 245 pounds, center Ryan Bailey is imposing in and out of the water. The U.S. men's water polo player from Long Beach talks about what it takes to play his position - it can get rough.
Long Beach’s Ryan Bailey scored three goals to lead the U.S. men’s water polo team to a victory over Romania Tuesday.
After falling behind 5-3 halfway through the second quarter, the U.S. shut down the Romanians' attack, scoring four unanswered goals, two of which came from Bailey.
Down just one goal with 5:43 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter it appeared that Romania could mount a comeback. But goals by Seal Beach’s Adam Wright, Peter Varellas and Bailey put the game out of reach.
Wright finished the game with two goals, while Long Beach’s Tony Azevedo and Newport Beach’s John Mann each had one goal apiece.
Tuesday’s victory puts the U.S. in a tie with powerhouse Serbia for first place in Group B.
The U.S., which has not won gold in water polo since 1904, will take on Great Britain Thursday.
